Daddy made it all better |
A lot happened in Emma's first month of life. We got home from the hospital on Saturday July 3rd. The next day being the 4th we went to Donna and Gregg's for fireworks. Of course it was Emma's first holiday and big outing.
Her first doctor appointment on the following Tuesday bought some news we didn't like so much. Her left hip was sliding in and out of the socket, and the right one was a bit loose. So her doctor recommended us to go to a specialist in Greenville NC. Of course our question was "how soon", and his response was "tomorrow"! At this appointment she also had jaundice pretty bad, so we were told to bring her back in on Thursday for another check. She weighed 7 lbs 4 oz at her first doctor appointment.
So the next day we headed to Greenville, and they checked her hips out and then we were told she would have to go in a pavlik harness 24/7 until the hip stayed in the socket on its own. Oh did the tears flow, my baby girl was going into a harness, which would make it where I couldn't just hold her tight and cuddle her up. But it was for the best, so they put her in it, and we headed home, and baby Emma did not know what was going on and made sure to let us know. She would only go to sleep lying on daddy's chest the next few days. But she eventually adjusted, as did we.
The following day we had her jaundice level checked again, and she was good to go. Thank God, because I didn't know if I could handle much more at that point!
Her next doctors appointment went well, she was right where she needed to be on weight and she was developing very well. The next Greenville appointment was on July 16th. The doctor had an ultrasound done of her hips. He told us that they were greatly improving, and adjusted her harness and sent us on our way.
The next big thing to happen in Emma's first month, was probably a bigger change for mommy and daddy. That would be July 19th when Nick left for basic training in Great Lakes, IL. It was very hard on me to have him leave, but I stayed focused on Emma and graduation finally came-but that is a story in itself.
So after daddy was gone, we had to go back to Greenville on July 30th for another hip check. The news was still the same at this point, the ultrasound still showed little improvement and the doctor told me the next step would be a body cast if the harness didn't work out by the next visit, so we crossed our fingers and waited.
At her 1 month checkup, Emma received her first round of shots, but she did rather well if I do say so myself. She weiged 10 lbs 1 oz. They could not get height because the harness had to stay on.
Well this sums up one month...now onto the next
